Five things to do in one quiet week

A curated handful of what makes Chongqing worth the flight on its own — before you factor in the hospital. The train through the building is real. So is the hotpot.

Five Stops, One District

All five picks sit within the Yuzhong peninsula or a short ride from it — walkable on a clear day, linked by the world's busiest light rail on a foggy one.

Hongya Cave

Eleven storeys of yellow light, stacked against a cliff face

The photograph everyone takes is from the Qianximen bridge across the gorge — a cascade of yellow lanterns reflected in the Jialing below. Arrive at dusk, when the lights are on but the sky isn't yet black. The interior is a tightly packed network of Bayu stilt-house restaurants and teahouses; the architecture is restored but not false.

Liziba Light Rail

The train that runs through floors 6–8 of a residential building

Line 2 passes through the middle of a nineteen-storey residential block at Liziba station. There is a dedicated viewing platform on the hillside opposite — arrive around 16:30 when the light angles in from the west. Trains run every six minutes. The residents have lived with this since 2004 and report average noise inside the building at around 40 dB.

Chaotianmen

The point of the peninsula where the Yangtze meets the Jialing

The confluence sits at the very tip of the Yuzhong peninsula. The Raffles observation deck on the 52nd floor of the twin towers overhead gives you the full geography — two rivers, three districts, the fog burning off the water in the early morning. The deck is open until 22:00 and sells tickets at ¥168; the square below is free and good for the riverfront at any hour.

Yangtze Night Cruise

The city becomes a circuit board upended into fog

A 90-minute loop on the Yangtze after dinner. The cruise boats leave from Chaotianmen pier; the route passes the Raffles towers lit up in sequence, the older Jialing bridge, and the unlit stretch of riverbank where the mountains begin. The effect at speed is a city turned into light-on-water. Tickets at ¥80; book through the pier or we handle it as part of your itinerary.

Hotpot · Jiulongpo

Beef tallow, dried chiles, Sichuan peppercorns — the real version

Chongqing hotpot is different from Sichuan hotpot: the base is beef tallow, not vegetable oil, and the heat is a numbness as much as a burn. Order the yuanyang pot (half spicy, half clear) if it's your first time. Tripe, duck blood, and fatty beef are the canonical order. Jiulongpo has the older-style restaurants that the locals go to — noisier, slower, better. We book the table as part of your itinerary.

Chongqing Drone Show

Thousands of synchronized drones light up the night sky at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, creating a massive, fluid canvas of light.

The performance typically takes place on Saturday nights and features themes that refresh monthly to honor holidays or special events. The choreography—which can involve thousands of drones acting as individual pixels—blends traditional Chinese symbolism with modern technological icons against the backdrop of the illuminated city skyline.

Chongqing Zoo

A wildlife haven in the city, home to a large panda family

Chongqing Zoo is one of the leading urban zoos in China and boasts one of the largest numbers of giant pandas of any city zoo. The Panda Pavilion is the top attraction, featuring a two-level transparent dome corridor that offers multiple angles to observe the pandas feeding and playing. Beyond the iconic pandas, the zoo serves as a vital conservation base for the critically endangered South China tiger and houses other rare species like golden snub-nosed monkeys and giant salamanders.

Day trips from the city

Further Out, Worth the Drive

Two UNESCO-level sites within reach of a single day. Both are included in the 7- and 10-day programs as optional add-ons.

WULONG

Karst sinkholes

Three hours southeast of the city. The Tiankeng sinkholes are each 200–300 metres across and 300 metres deep — natural shafts punched through the limestone plateau. The descent path is paved and lit; the silence at the bottom is complete. Half-day trip from Chongqing on the high-speed train.

DAZU

Rock carvings · UNESCO

Two hours west. Tenth- to thirteenth-century Buddhist, Confucian, and Taoist carvings cut directly into the limestone cliff face. The Beishan and Baoding Hill sites are the most significant — Baoding's 31-metre reclining Buddha is carved in one unbroken sweep of rock. Entry ¥115.

BEIBEI

Hot-spring circuit

Forty minutes north by metro. Beibei district sits on a mineral spring belt — the waters here are sodium bicarbonate and weakly radioactive in the European spa tradition. Several hotels run day-pass pools from ¥180. We build this into the recovery afternoon after your checkup.
